  27.      Belshazzar the king made a great feast to a thousand of his lords, and
  28. drank wine before the thousand.  Belshazzar, while he tasted the wine,
  29. commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which Nebuchadnezzar his
  30. father had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king and
  31. his lords, his wives and his concubines, might drink therefrom.  Then they
  32. brought the golden vessels that were taken out of the temple of the house of
  33. God which was at Jerusalem; and the king and his lords, his wives and his
  34. concubines, drank from them.  They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold,
  35. and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

  37.      In the same hour came forth the fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over
  38. against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and
  39. the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.  Then the king's ^2 countenance
  40. was changed in him, and his thoughts troubled him; and the joints of his loins
  41. were loosed, and his knees smote one against another.  The king cried aloud to
  42. bring in the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spake
  43. and said to the wise men of Babylon, Whosoever shall read this writing, and
  44. show me the interpretation thereof, shall be clothed with purple, and have a
  45. chain of gold about his neck, and shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.
  46. Then came in all the king's wise men; but they could not read the writing, nor
  47. make known to the king the interpretation.  Then was king Belshazzar greatly
  48. troubled, and his countenance was changed in him, and his lords were
  49. perplexed.

  53.      Now the queen by reason of the words of the king and his lords came into
  54. the banquet house: the queen spake and said, O king, live for ever; let not
  55. thy thoughts trouble thee, nor let thy countenance be changed.  There is a man
  56. in thy kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of thy
  57. father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were
  58. found in him; and the king Nebuchadnezzar thy father, ^3 the king, I say, thy
  59. father, made him master of the magicians, enchanters, Chaldeans, and
  60. soothsayers; forasmuch as an excellent spirit, and knowledge, and
  61. understanding, interpreting of dreams, and showing of dark sentences, and
  62. dissolving of doubts, were found in the same Daniel, whom the king named
  63. Belteshazzar.  Now let Daniel be called, and he will show the interpretation.

  67.      Then was Daniel brought in before the king.  The king spake and said unto
  68. Daniel, Art thou that Daniel, who art of the children of the captivity of
  69. Judah, whom the king my father brought out of Judah?  I have heard of thee,
  70. that the spirit of the gods is in thee, and that light and understanding and
  71. excellent wisdom are found in thee.  And now the wise men, the enchanters,
  72. have been brought in before me, that they should read this writing, and make
  73. known unto me the interpretation thereof; but they could not show the
  74. interpretation of the thing.  But I have heard of thee, that thou canst give
  75. interpretations, and dissolve doubts: now if thou canst read the writing, and
  76. make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with
  77. purple, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler
  78. in the kingdom.

  80.      Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to
  81. thyself, and give thy rewards to another; nevertheless I will read the writing
  82. unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation.  O thou kicg, the
  83. Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and
  84. glory, and majesty: and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the
  85. peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would
  86. he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and
  87. whom he would he put down.  But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit
  88. was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne,
  89. and they took his glory from him: and he was driven from the sons of men, and
  90. his heart was made like the beasts', and his dwelling was with the wild asses;
  91. he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven;
  92. until he knew that the Most High God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he
  93. setteth up over it whomsoever he will.  And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast
  94. not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this, but hast lifted up
  95. thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his
  96. house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have
  97. drunk wine from them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of
  98. brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God
  99. in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
  100. glorified.  Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this
  101. writing was inscribed.

  103.      And this is the writing that was inscribed: ^1 Mene, Mene, Tekel,
  104. Upharsin.  This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered
  105. thy kingdom, and brought it to an end.  Tekel; thou art weighed in the
  106. balances, and art found wanting. ^2 Peres; thy kingdom is divided, and given
  107. to the Medes and Persians.

  113.      Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a
  114. chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he
  115. should be the third ruler in the kingdom.

  117.      In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.  And Darius the
  118. Mede received the kingdom, being about threescore and two years old.
